Hawaiian flowers are brightly colored wonders that can be seen everywhere
on the different islands in Hawaii. The flowers are beautiful, unique,
and striking blooms that make amazing flower arrangements. Hawaiian
flower arrangements are ideal for use in weddings and other celebrations.
These bouquets also make great gifts for close friends, family members,
and business associates.
Some exotic plants that can be found in Hawaii are native to the islands.
However, there are also many plants that have been introduced to the
area throughout the years. Of these exotic plants some are flowering
and others are fruit bearing. In fact, fruit bearing plants are so plentiful
in the Hawaiian Islands that residents do not buy fruit. They simply
grow it and/or pick it from plants growing in their own backyards.
Some of the most popular types of flowers that are associated with
the Hawaiian region are anthuriums. Anthuriums have been growing in
Hawaii for years, and many people seem to be under the impression that
these unusual blooms are native to the American islands. However, this
is just not true. Anthuriums were introduced into the region in the
1880s, and are actually native to rainforests in other parts of the
world. Regardless of this fact, these vibrant plastic like blooms are
still considered, by a great number of people, to be a native plant
to the Hawaiian Islands.
Both native Hawaiian’s and the people that had adopted the Islands
as their home love their flowers. Not only does the state of Hawaii
have an official state flower, but each island also has an official
flower. Below is a list of the official flowers for each area in Hawaii.
The official state flower: Yellow hibiscus
Individual Official Island Flowers
Big Island - The red ohia, which is a native Hawaiian flowering tree.
Kauai - The mokihana, which is actually not a flower at all. It is a
green berry.
Maui - It has two names, the pink lokelani and the cottage rose. It
is also the only non-native plant that is recognized as an official
island flower.
Molokai – The white kukui blossom, a flower that is very popular
with island lei makers.
Lanai – The kaunaoa, which is a yellow or orange air plant.
Niihau – The white pupu shell.
Even the un-inhabited island of Kahoolaw has an official Island flower.
It is the hinahina, a flower that is often found in Hawaiian leis.
With the abundance of lush greenery and bright exotic flowers in Hawaii,
it is the ideal climate and location for botanical gardens.
